Frau mit Teller

From Collar to Diadem

Year: 2007
Material: Gold thread, wire, bobbin lace

Crafted by Heike Lorenz, an experienced artisan from the Erzgebirge region –
an area with a long tradition of bobbin lace, often associated with women’s work.

As a child and teenager, lace-making had been tied to obligation and reluctance. Decades later, through her collaboration with Monika Hutter, the craft became newly accessible to her: for the first time, practiced with joy rather than duty.

The design, materials, and dimensions were precisely specified by the artist.
Instead of white thread, doilies, and ornamental collars: gold thread, wire, and textile adornment with intent.

The technique remains – but the narrative shifts.
Craft becomes a medium for a new visual language.
Decoration becomes meaning. Tradition becomes transformation.
